  6. Old Business
  7. 1. Driver Training:
David Thomas drove the Tanker on 5/11/16. He intended to drive the engine, but the air horn seemed to be stuck on.
After further investigation it was found that there was a stray piece of wire preventing the air horn pedal from fully releasing.
This was removed and the issue was corrected.
    2. Cistern Update:
    Katelyn needs to paint.
Goodwins will put in a gravel “driveway” to allow the trucks a firm surface in order to access the cistern.
A large bag of grass seed has been purchased.
Wednesday, May 18, 2016; 4:00pm- Any available fire department members are to meet at the cistern for a work session to smooth out the top soil and plant grass seed.
    3. Turnout Gear Purchase
    Shipping week of 5/09/16.
    4. 501 (c)3
Katelyn needs to follow up with the town’s attorney.

  8. New Business:
  9. 1. Accountability Tags
Katelyn presents an idea for metal accountability tags and a velcro board.
The majority of members do not like this idea and would like to stick with plastic tags that match what Mount Desert Fire is doing.
Katelyn will look into this further to try and find a company to print them.
Katelyn to also reach out to Jack Martel, Deputy Chief at SWH Fire to see if he can help with the tags.
    2. IVFD Well
Katelyn approached Gary Gould to receive an alternate estimate for well drilling. He estimated the drilling at $7,320.
P.L. Jones & Sons estimated the well to cost $3,500/ day for a total of up to 3 days.
    3. Truck Service Testing
Greenwood Emergency Apparatus will be sending 2-3 technicians to the island to complete a pump and chassis service on the IVFD pumper and tanker, as well as an oil change for the CIRS Ambulance.
Katelyn needs to hire the Goodwin’s barge to barge out the service truck.
Katelyn needs to get 2.5 gallon oil jugs from the co-op to store used oil so that the co-op can transport it off to Downeast Diesel.
    4. Approved Open Burning Reminder
Katelyn updates the department on what is considered approved open burning by the state of Maine. This is based on a conversation with the ME Forest Service.
The Forest Service updated Katelyn about when it is possible to burn without a permit. There are three conditions that this is okay- if there is snow on the ground, if you are using a BBQ grill or if you have a firepit that has a cooking/ warming fire. A cooking/ warming fire is defined as a fire that is small enough that you have to stand over it to warm your hands. If you have to back away from the fire because it is too warm- than the fire is too big and it has become unpermitted.
Anything outside of the three conditions above require a written permit from the local fire wardens or a permit acquired online from maineburnpermit.com. The online permit costs $7, and the written permits from the local wardens are free. You MUST have the permit in hand at all times while burning and you MUST follow the conditions on the permit.
