Minutes of 14 July 2011

I. Meeting was called to order by chairperson Barbara Meyers at the Islesford School at 3:20 P.M. Present: School Board members Barbara Meyers and Ted Spurling, Jr.; Selectman Phil Whitney; Contractor Ben Fulves; Jeri Spurling.
II. Continued Discussions Regarding Islesford School and Longfellow School Building Projects:
A. Ben Fulves said that Tim Henderson of Riverside Lane Corp. has done water and mold samples (Longfellow School). He is concerned about possible mold in basement. Results are still at the State Lab.
B. Report from Lanpher and Associates (Dennis Riley): Fire escape at Longfellow is in poor condition.
C. Anderson Construction to begin demolition in Longfellow basement on Monday. This will involve taking down insulation, demolition of partitions etc.
D. Ben has written electrical specifications and solicited to three electricians: MCM, Whitney’s Electric, and Atom Electric. This will include wiring and lights in basement. Ben estimates $1100.
E. Re-purposing the money set aside for siding at Longfellow:
1. Ben would like to present an alternative budget to Selectmen and would like guidance.
2. Ben said that we must bring the building into compliance whether used as a school or not.
3. Phil Whitney recommended presenting this as a multi-use building and not merely as a school.
4. Ben: The School Board should review his list of remedies and decide what to present on the warrant [NOTE: as of this meeting, a special Town Meeting had been planned during August. This was canceled.].
5. Phil recommended getting a legal opinion, that CEO Kim Keene may be incorrect. Ben said that a call to the State Fire Marshall may be enough.
