School Committee Meeting at the Islesford Library
Thursday, 16 January 2014

Attendance: Katelyn Damon, Barbara Meyers, Kelly SanbornOthers present: Howard Colter, Heather Webster, Ben Fulves, Phil Whitney
I. Call to Order Meeting called to order at 10:08 am.
II. Review and Approval of VoucherIII.Approval of Minutes - Minutes from the 12/23 meeting, as well as the minutes from the 12/16 Workshop were submitted for approval. Barbara Meyers moved to accept minutes as written. Katelyn seconded. All in favor. Approved.
IV. Reports and Updates Principal’s Report - Attached. Some highlights include:1/23/14 is an early release day.1/20/14 MLK Day. No school.1/24/14 the middle school kids will be singing the National Anthem in Portland.Facility Updates: The TV monitor arrived and Tom Powell will be hooking the the Apple TV. There was discussion of a possible ice rink being put in at ABS. The new school van is at Heather’s and ready to be delivered to Islesford when weather and barging allow.Building Update: Ben Fulves reported the Fire Marshal’s concern with the design of the wheelchair ramp at the Longfellow school that required an adjustment to that design. The correction was submitted to him on Friday. To date, he had not heard back from the Fire Marshal. He felt this was the only issue and everything else looked good, but that the inspection on the 21st that may cause him to look again at the Master Plan. He reported there was a small leak in the sprinkler system and Heather was working on it.
V.Other Business: Discussion of any potential fallout to the school board and their work from the communication Katelyn sent regarding alleged comments made by Ben Fulves. Barbara had been approached by some GCI residents that had strong concerns with the impact this fallout might have to the board’s work and school committee relations.Discussion of concern that Ben’s truck was being potentially vandalized by screws being driven into the tires. Heather expressed concerns that incidents of vandalism, if occurring during school time, are a major problem. These incidents cost the school more money. His time to deal with the tires takes away from time he should be working for the school. Brief discussion on the best way to reach Barbara when she is traveling on the Sunbeam. She indicated her COA email was still the best and the Sunbeam’s direct phone number at 460-2282.Google Docs and browser issues were discussed.Preparation for the public forums ensued with possible questions that could potentially come up and how we would like to be prepared to answer.Next meeting was set for Wednesday, February 12th at the Longfellow School at 9:00 am.
VII.Adjournment. Barbara made a motion to adjourn at 11:25 am. Kelly seconded. Approved.

Principal’s Report for the Cranberry IslesHeather WebsterJanuary 16, 2014Upcoming Events:January 20th: no school for Martin Luther King Jr. DayJanuary 23rd: early release day for teacher professional developmentJanuary 24th: MDES chorus trip to the Portland Pirates gameFacility Updates: Outdoor rubber mats were purchased for the new porch.A tv monitor and stand were ordered for the GCI.The ice is building up on the b-ball court at the ABS. Jim is going to extend the “boardwalk” in front of the school for safety reasons.Curriculum Updates:The early release day on the 23rd will be used for curriculum development in our school. Lauren and Audrey will working together on upcoming units.The school has purchased 2 Foss Science kits to be used this year in conjunction with the TLC science plan. The students are now learning about the human body.Misc.:The van is in my driveway, ready to be loaded up and barged. It could happen any day now!
